Barbara Jean (Childs) Hrycuna, 98, passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at The Courville of Manchester. She was born May 31, 1928 and was the youngest of five children of the late Charles and Pearl (Hawkes) Childs of Londonderry, NH.
Barbara met and married Charles Hrycuna in 1946 and they were married for 58 years. During their marriage, Barbara and Chuck raised five children while building a very successful business, Hrycuna Asphalt Paving and Hryco Sand and Gravel in Hooksett, NH. She handled all the bookkeeping and was the coordinator behind the scenes. Her role as office manager fit with her entrepreneurial business side. Barbara was always one to expand her opportunities with so many different businesses over the years. She was a branch manager of Standard Service Bureau, Inc of Boston which was an insurance investigating business, which she ran out of her home office for many years. Even though she handled the business side, she carved out time to be a Girl Scout Leader and was active with the First Congregational Church in Manchester, NH.
Anyone who knew Barbara knows her love of large get-togethers and hosting many fun parties over her lifetime. Barbara and Chuck were a loving close couple and enjoyed their retirement job of selling weathervanes and artistic lawn decorations at different craft fairs when they lived in Sanford, Florida with products manufactured by The Lazy Scroll, which was the company owned by Gerry and Joanna Hrycuna.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was predeceased by her husband: Charles (2005); and her son: Charles, Jr. (2023).
She will be sadly missed by her surviving family members including her four children: Bruce (Janet) Hrycuna of Manchester, NH, Gerry (Joanna) Hrycuna of Wilmer, AL, Darlene (Stephen) Skupien of Murrysville, PA and Charlene (Robert) Janiak of Boise, ID; her daughter-in-law: Kathleen Hrycuna; her eight grandchildren: Michael (Katie) Janiak of Boise, ID, Katie Ann Janiak of Boise, ID, Jason (Alison) Hrycuna of Sandown, NH, Dawn (John) Morris of Litchfield, NH, Tanya (Drew) Miller of Saco, ME, Sonja (Brent) Pearson of Kittery, ME, Samuel Skupien and Vera Skupien of Murrysville; and her three great grandchildren: Oliver and Berkeley Pearson and Violet Miller.
The family would like to express their gratitude to VNA Home Health & Hospice Service of Manchester, NH for their compassionate care for Barbara in her final days.
